Fincantieri wins $800 million order in the US for new LSM ships February 19, 2026

Fincantieri consolidates its leadership in naval shipbuilding. The group, led by Pierroberto Folgiero, through its subsidiary Fincantieri Marinette Marine, has been selected by the U.S. Navy to build the first four Landing Ship Medium (LSM) vessels.

The deal, part of an overall order estimated at approximately $800 million, will see the Italian group operate in the Wisconsin shipyards alongside the American Bollinger Shipyards.

The announcement from the U.S. Navy's Naval Systems Command outlines a new acquisition strategy aimed at accelerating the program and mitigating industrial risks.

The Navy has opted for a management model that includes the appointment of a Construction Manager, who holds the prime contract and is responsible for coordinating subcontracts with individual shipyards.

The stated objective is strict cost control and adherence to delivery schedules, critical issues that have emerged in previous naval programs.

To reduce development time, the U.S. Navy has chosen Damen Naval's LST 100 project as the technical basis, an existing design that guarantees immediate operational reliability.

Fincantieri will build the first four units, while the awarding strategy for the remaining three ships under the basic contract remains with the Contracting Authority.

The overall program is far-reaching: Washington is aiming for a fleet of 35 LSM vessels, considered the cornerstone of the Marine Corps' new distributed logistics architecture.

The Medium Landing Ships are strategic assets designed to bridge the gap between small landing craft and large multi-mission amphibious vessels.

Their primary mission will be to ensure coastal mobility and logistics capability in contested environments, with a specific focus on the Indo-Pacific.

The final signing of the agreement is expected by mid-2026, confirming the Wisconsin hub as the hub of U.S. naval shipbuilding, led by Italy.
