automotive sector: decline in sales

03/02/2025

Since 2020, the European automotive component manufacturing sector has lost around 86 thousand jobs, of which 60% (52 thousand) in Germany alone.

The alarm comes from Clepa, the association representing suppliers in the automotive sector, within a study that paints a picture full of black clouds for the automotive supply chain.

The research provides several other numbers on the current moment of difficulty and the various causes, including the decline in demand, the increase in production costs and the delays in investments in new technologies. I

n the first months of 2024 alone, the cuts of another 32 thousand workers were announced.

This figure is higher than the 29 thousand reported in the second half of 2020, the "worst period of the pandemic", and heralds the probable worsening of the employment situation.

Furthermore, the research quantifies yet another divergence between predictions and reality. Until recently, the creation of over 100,000 new jobs was expected by 2025 also thanks to the opportunities offered by the ecological transition and the transition to electric mobility: on the contrary, we are moving towards a "net loss of almost 56 thousand positions ".
