Stop diesel and petrol: the revision of the legislation remains until 2026

07/01/2025

From Brussels comes a cold shower on Italian hopes of bringing forward to 2025 the revision clause of the regulations that establish a stop to the sale of new petrol and diesel cars in 2035.

The intention of the highest executive body of the European Union is in fact to activate the clause in 2026, as already provided for by the same regulation.

To "reach climate neutrality by 2050" we will need "a wide range of innovative technologies, in areas ranging from mobility to energy.

For example, the climate neutrality target for cars by 2035 creates predictability for investors and manufacturers.

To get there, a technology-neutral approach will be needed, in which e-fuels have a role to play through a targeted change to the regulation as part of the planned review.

The need for e-fuels in other sectors, where no technological alternatives exist, such as aviation and maritime transport, will also be considered, taking into account their expected scarcity, energy-intensive production process and their costs expected.
