From the EU 24 million euros for the Italian hydrogen backbone.
The EU Commission will give a major boost to the Italian hydrogen backbone. The development project of this new infrastructure, promoted by Snam and called 'Italian H2 Backbone', will in fact receive 24 million euros of European funds through the CEF - Connecting Europe Facility programme, to which the work has had access having been included last November in the new list of 166 projects of common interest (PCI - Project of Common Interest) drawn up by Brussels.
The pipeline, which will run for 2,700 km crossing the entire country, from Mazara del Vallo to Passo Gries, will constitute an essential element of the SoutH2 Corridor, the southern corridor which will have to transport the hydrogen produced in North Africa (Algeria and Tunisia have recently formally joined the initiative) up to Austria and Germany, passing through the Bel Paese.
The allocation of the CEF funds was officially communicated by the Commission, which allocated a total of 1.25 billion euros in favor of 41 cross-border energy infrastructure projects included in the lists of Projects of Common Interest (PCI) and Projects of Mutual Interest (PMI), in the framework of TEN-E (Trans-European Networks for Energy).
In its note, the Commission recalls that - as underlined in the report drawn up by Mario Draghi - investments in these energy infrastructures are essential to guarantee Europe's competitiveness and will contribute to the integration of markets and the decarbonisation of the continental energy system.
The one relating to the Italian backbone is one of the 21 hydrogen projects that will be financed through the CEF program, with a total of 250 million euros.
The grants are intended for projects in Austria, Belgium, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Lithuania, Latvia, Poland, Portugal, Spain and Sweden.
Among these, in addition to the Italian H2 Backbone, there are the BarMar-H2med project between Spain and France (which will receive over 28 million euros), the backbones of Portugal and Spain and the hydrogen corridors in the Baltic region.
