Sand batteries: a new energy storage system
15/01/2024
Sand batteries: already used for district heating, they represent one of the most innovative energy storage systems that are also starting to make headway in Italy, after having been tested in Finland.
We are referring at at a 4 by 7 meter steel tank, reminiscent of a silo, filled with one hundred tons of sand.
Since last year it has been guaranteeing district heating for the town of Kankaanpää, 13 thousand inhabitants, 270 kilometers northwest of Helsinki. It was designed (and then built, together with the utility Vatajankoski) by a small Finnish startup with an evocative name, Polar Night Energy, the first to launch so-called sand batteries on a commercial scale.
We look forward to seeing the development of this new technology in Italy as well.
